The initial point from Christoph Schlingensiefs “Animatographen” – Project was a production of Wagners “Parsifal” in Bayreuth (2004). Since that time he developed a series of installations, which not only go beyond the scope of theatre, but also leave the well known actionistical theatre behind.
“The Animatograph is like a living organism, on that the spectator is cruising around, living and becoming part of it.”
Before Namibia the Animatograph was on various other places: For the first time it was built in Iceland, where the earth’s crusts of the continental plates meet each other. From there it moved to Neuhardenberg near Berlin. Here Schlingensief transferred untold Myth - Stories into a deep in the woods situated Military Camp, to continue the development of the original Animatography that began in “Parsifal”: “ The Animatograph – Odins Parsipark”. Following that Schlingensief moved on to Namibia. , the former Deutsch Suedwestafrika. There he shot a film “African Twin Towers”, dealing with the german colonial guilty, 11th september and the mythology of the Holy Grail.
“It is more about Africa, than 11. September. We are talking about 3.500 people, who were killed on September the eleventh. In Africa 35.000 people die every day.”
The Animatograph makes it possible to move present and past, politics and mythology into each other, to crossfade, to make mystical and historical figures present, connecting Nordic – European or African traditions as well as the cinematic visions of the Wagnerian grail with the African shamanistic rites and the Icelandic Saga world (“Edda”).
